Brand Identity in the Age of AI: What a Week-Long Test Revealed
Overview
As a small, lean design studio, we often hear the talk that AI will replace designers. To cut through the noise, I conducted a targeted stress-test: could AI handle an end-to-end brand identity project? I built a complete brand for a markdown editor concept, including logo, typography system, color palette, and mockups. The AI-assisted exploration and execution were followed by refinements in Figma, just like any real project.
What worked well
– Exploration speed: AI generated multiple directions in minutes, a level of breadth that would take hours by hand. This is especially valuable for breaking creative blocks early in a project.
– Rapid iteration: The tool accelerates the early, exploratory phase, helping teams converge on promising concepts faster.
What didn’t hold up
– Craft and polish: Font work produced by AI isn’t usable in its raw form, and mockups required substantial cleanup. The output can feel generic and overly confident without refinement.
– Design taste and nuance: The system lacks a nuanced sense of taste and brand character, which led to directions that were technically complete but lacked distinctive personality.
Big takeaway
AI behaves like a junior team member who works quickly and tirelessly but requires clear direction from a senior designer. It accelerates exploration and reduces fatigue but cannot reliably replace the seasoned judgment, craft, and strategic decisions that shape a brand. The “replacement” narrative is overstated, and the “useless” narrative is equally inaccurate.
