Word to founders looking for a tech cofounder. Please no blind NDA.

Reframed: A Founders’ Guide to Tech Co-Founders: Skip the Blind NDA

As a CTO with several startups under my belt, I’m often open to joining a new project. But time and again, founders approach me with one request before we even talk: sign a blind NDA.

Let me be blunt: asking for an NDA before meaningful conversation is a bad first impression. Here’s why.

  • What you’re really protecting may not be legally enforceable. Blind NDAs rarely hold up in court and tend to create unnecessary friction.
  • Your idea isn’t as unique as you think. Often there are two scenarios: either nobody pursues it because there’s little market need, or there’s already competition and you have a differentiating twist (your team, execution, and “special sauce” matter far more than the mere concept). It’s rarely the idea itself that’s one-of-a-kind.

If you can’t share your idea openly with a potential cofounder, how will you ever sell it—especially to someone you don’t know well?

Bottom line: skip the blind NDA. Focus on building trust, sharing the vision, and validating the problem and approach together. That’s how you attract and engage the right technical cofounder.
